Strangeness and Charm

Sorry for the crappy iPhone photos - before we started doing this little DIY I didn't think that it could in fact be a blog post...Then suddenly as we were removing the Masonite and nails from the backing I thought "Woo, DIY blogpost ya'll". I didn't have time to grab my camera etc - Jonathan was just moving too fast for that. He is some kind of DIY machine.

So here you have it. What used to be a tapestry piece in an antique frame is now an illustration that Jonathan drew for me! Please note: It is not a portrait.

To make your own at home you will need:

• An antique frame or any frame you like
• A Stanley Knife
• Thick cardboard from an art shop to make you Map board
• A metal ruler
• A pencil 
• A hard surface to cut on. DO NOT USE CARPET!!

How to:

• Using the backing board from your selected frame - measure out and pencil in the size of your cardboard/ map board. Draw two vertical lines from corner to corner to determine your center-point.
• Center your artwork and pencil in the size on the white side of your card board.
• Measure in 1cm in from your artwork line to ensure your artwork is held in place
• Using your stanley knife and metal ruler cut along your lines and then remove the excess
• Place map board on top of artwork and place them both inside frame
• Put backing on frame and voila! You're done.  Pretty damn simple.

seeing red

These MinkPink jeans are so bloody comfortable and light enough to wear during summer. I used to dislike red - It was one of those colours that just didn't suit me. But It has grown on me and now I notice that when shopping I am steering towards all things red! Crazzzyyy!You can find these babies at MARKETHQ

I teamed my MinkPink jeans with one of the softest cotton shirts you could ever image.  It has  delicate lace shoulders -  However they're a bit hard to spot in these photographs. But I am sure it will feature in more outfit post as it is soon becoming a summer staple. I can image wearing it with denim cut offs, skirts and even left open over vintage dresses! Wrangler you have made one versatile shirt!

Hope you all had a wicked weekend!The countdown for the Christmas break has officially started - and I for one can not wait to go away for a few weeks!

I could literally spend all day rampaging through design blogs.  I can't put my finger on why I find it so much fun. But I think it has something to do with "one day I'll be able to have something like this" sort of mentality.

As I have mentioned before we are just renting our cute little apartment, so we can't do much to it. I really want to go crazy with some Wattyl,  spend up big at Bunnings and restore some rad antique furniture that I just happened to pick up for a bargain... Hopefully that all starts in the not too distant future.

These pics are just some I have collected over the past few weeks. So enjoy.

I haven't done an outfit post for a while - so I feel rather slack. Sorry! Normally my outfit posts are done over the weekend, but most weekends lately I have been too busy!

I have been wanting Vans for ages. I went through a Converse stage, but now I don't like them so much...I thought I would give Vans a whirl. Jonathan got them for me from CCS for only $44.95 or something. Crazy price compared to every retailer in Australia which charge around $89.95. I dunno, I just can't really justify paying nearly $100 for canvas sneakers I'd rather spend that $100 on heels.

Dream Big

Rach from In Spaces Between tagged me to take part in Sportsgirl's BELIEVE initiative. What an awesome little idea!!

So here you have it, some answers about my dreams past and present.

Q: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A: It's a running joke in my family that as a child I wanted to be an "Mermaid Marching-girl". I had a vivid imagination as a child (still do)- so to me at age 4-5, I thought being a "Mermaid Marching-girl" was a realistic goal. I soon realised that Mermaids could not in fact walk, let alone march, so my dream soon faded...

Fast forward to my early teens and I wanted to be an Olympic swimmer. I was a really strong swimmer and participated in all my swimming club carnivals, winning most races. So I really thought it would be something I would pursue. I still love swimming - but I realised that I had a stronger love for fashion.

Fast forward once again to grades 9, 10, 11,12 of high school where I discovered textiles and visual arts. From there I found a love of sewing and drawing. I knew that I wanted to work in a creative field from then on.

Q: Did you make this dream come true or change your mind?

A: I am actively pursuing my dream from my later teens. It is something I am so passionate about, which I think is very important. Your passion will be what allows you to live out your goals/ dreams. I think it will be a dream where I keep changing things a long the way. As I grow, my dreams will grow and I guess only get bigger.

Q:What is your fave childhood memory?

A: I have a lot of great childhood memories. We moved around a lot throughout my childhood, as my parents are teachers. To some this sounds like their worst nightmare; having to make new friends, start new schools etc - but I loved it. I love meeting new people.

Q: The biggest dream you have right now?

A: My biggest dream at the moment is for Who Killed Bambi (My online store) to do well and to make it bigger and better. It's as simple as that. I constantly have new ideas for WKB, so I am going to keep things evolving to make sure that comes true.

Q: Your summer must-have pick from the current Sportsgirl range?

A: Out of all the questions - this one is by far the hardest. There is too many gorgeous pieces to choose from!! 

I love the Miss Unkon Little magic playsuit and also I can never go past SG accessories. I love pops of red at the moment so the Pippa medium satchel feeds that addiction well!

Monster, Monster

Hey guys

Today marks my 550th post on Unknown Pleasures!

SO, this post is dedicated to each and every one of you. A big thank you to everyone who takes the time to read my blog daily. To old followers and the new. I really appreciate your comments and for sticking by me! You are all just too ah-mazzzz-ing.

Continuing on from my "wine" post from yesterday....I did warn you I had a little bit of a thing for maroon still. Not sure why, I thought I saw enough of it through out the winter months.

It's far too hot in Queensland this week to wear anything but loose summer dresses and shorts and tees. It's actually quite hard to dress in summer up here, as when you go outside in nice clothes you never feel nice an hour or so later you just feel sweaty and uncomfy.  Or if it's like past summers and all it does is rain...that's when things get extremely hard as it can be thunderstorms yet still 36 degrees. Seriously - what the hell can you even wear in that type of weather?

This little vintage dress will be available soon on WHOKILLEDBAMBI. I am in love with the polka dots, the neckline and the now short length.

I took some photos of one of my good friends today. These are just a taste of what I took. Amy made it far too hard to select images. I had so much fun being behind the lens instead of in front of it for a change - but when Ams made my job so easy I could have photographed her all day.

I think I could get used to doing this more often. I got Amy to arrive with no make -up on as I wanted to shoot her raw. I really love the no make up and simple styling look at the moment.

By no means am I a photographer - just merely having lots of fun! Hope you guys like them.

I love this hat from Oak NY and I stumbled across this bag in Myer on the weekend and I haven't been able to get it out of my head since. It's nothing too special but in person I was drawn to it for some reason. I think these two things are on my unofficial Christmas list.

I only realised as  I was photoshopping the two together that they're somewhat the same colour. I often do that without realising. I must be in a wine/purple kinda mood!

The man on the bicycle

"The best fashion show is definitely on the street" - Bill Cunningham

On Saturday night we stayed in and watched Bill Cunningham New York. And far out, what a fantastic documentary!

For those of you unaware of Bill Cunningham/ the man on the bicycle, I'll bring you up to speed. Bill Cunningham photographs people and the passing scene on the streets of Manhattan daily. Through watching this documentary you will see he only photographs people who are wearing extraordinary things. Bill Cunningham has a keen eye for fashion and likes to see people steering clear of "cookie cutter" sameness. And I for one have that same outlook. Why would you want to look like 10 million other people when it is so easy to be an individual?

What really was inspiring about this documentary was that Bill Cunningham is an 80+ man still doing what he loves and what he describes as "not work, it’s pleasure.". He has retained such a youthful spirit - He is still riding a bike around daily, he’s still on the street and is still doing his two columns for The Times. It is inspiring to see there is no age limit on the things you love to do and that if you keep active you will live a long, fulfilled life.

The documentary also has a sad undertone. Bill has chosen to live a modest life. He doesn't care for money and his apartment is very small, filled with filing cabinets upon filing cabinets. This is where he stores every photograph he has ever taken for his own reference. Bill's bed is merely a plank of wood and a mattress. He has never been in a relationship and he doesn't have any children. But he doesn't seem to care. He said he "hasn't ever had the time" - he's always been "too busy" to fit anything along those lines in. He works day and night, and has done so for years. Through this you can see that he has really taken a vow of fashion.

It truly is a must see - so please do! I bet you won't be able to stop smiling at how amazing this gentleman is.

PS: One of the only reasons why I want to go to New York is so I can bump into Bill on 57th Street and 5th Avenue. That would be amazing.

This is what I wore yesterday. I love the material of this dress. I love the length it is now as well. It was so, so hot yesterday. I felt like just wearing swimmers all day. But I ended up opting for this light weight summer dress instead.

What did you get up to on the past few days? My weekend has been so busy, but really fun as well! my weekend highlight? I went surfing in the morning with Jonathan for a bit of exercise and the same yesterday morning. I am so glad summer is just lurking around the corner!! I've made some summer resolutions!!

Chalk street art

This is a 3D street painting of a LEGO Terracotta Army for the Sarasota Chalk Festival in Florida. According to Leon Keer of Planet Streetpainting, the art is “inspired by the Terracotta Army of Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China”.

This artwork was created by Planet Streetpainting, a Dutch chalk art collective made up of street artists. I love how your eye plays a trick on you. I actually feel like there is a massive trench in the road. The correct term for this wonderful 3D illusion is  “anamorphic street painting" - and it is fast becoming a popular style of street art!

Animal Farm

These are out of control with coolness.

The label is "HAOSHI" (Est 2009) and all these incredible pieces of art are designed by Griffin a Taipei based designer. "Hao shi” means “good things”. Griffin believes that life is full of happy and interesting things. He tries to add a kind of purity/ peace into the design concept of his collections. Cool, huh? It's alot more than just a ring!

If we here in the Southern Hemisphere weren't heading in to what I think is going to be one of the hottest summers yet - I would think about buying this pattern from "Wool and the Gang". Wool and the Gang has ready made jumpers for those of you who can't knit/ too impatient or for those of you who like a challenge you can buy the kits to the jumpers and make yo' own! What a rad idea! So many D.I.Y ideas!

Lorna Jane Campaign

So I am over the moon today because my campaign for Lorna Jane hit store nation wide! It's a bit surreal seeing yourself in a shop front and in catalogues!!

I didn't even know 'til one of my friends emailed! She receives emails from LJ, so I popped up in her inbox this morning! He He.

This campaign is entitled "Follow My Lead". Throughout the campaign Lorna is telling her secrets to a healthy successful life.

On another note, Lorna has just released her first book "MOVE.NOURISH.BELIEVE" which you can pre-order here. I can guarantee you it is going to be very inspiring! I was lucky enough to spend the day shooting with her and she is amazing.
